Last night just wasn’t our night………… the cruel art of fighting.
Guillem fought very well against Daniel Tompkins a slightly heavier and more experience fighter. Guillem won the first round scoring well with solid leg and body kicks and scored well in the clinch. His opponent landed some heavy punches and was always dangerous. The second round was similar with Guillem scoring more and slightly ahead but then Guillem got caught with a solid right hand and a body punch and was counted out. Well done to Daniel and really gutted for Guillem with a good solid performance.
James fought the Spanish champion Omar who was really tall and southpaw. Both fighters started well exchanging big punches to the head but James’s took control landing some solid body kicks, he looked stronger and his techniques were more effective and accurate. He landed some solid leg kicks, some good elbows and his knees were sharp. His ringcraft was good and he looked the dominant fighter. He dropped Omar with a well timed right knee in the last minute of the 1st round and he took an eight count. James stepped it up looking to finish the fight early attacking the body with fast right body punches, he landed a couple of body kicks and kept trying to land the right knee and it looked like the end for Omar. James was so focused on his opponents body he forgot about his guard and literally a second after Jimbob shouted to him ‘get your hands up’ Omar landed a perfect left hook and dropped James who took an eight count. He got up but was not fully recovered and after taking a few more shots went down again and the referee stopped the contest.
Absolutely gutted and words cannot describe the frustration we feel for both our fighters. It’s hard to see fighters lose that way especially when it’s your family (I had a few tears for them when I got home). You have to give credit to Omar and it makes you realise how things can change so quickly in a fight, when a fighter is in trouble they are dangerous and you can’t afford to lose focus. A lack of concentration and complacency is all it takes in a fight to get caught.
Thank you to all our supporters I couldn’t see you🧐 but you were fantastically loud. Thanks to Pete, Jimbob and Darren my corner team and MTGP for the opportunity.
